Message-ID: References: <1992May12.141624.18513@dartvax.dartmouth.edu> Date: 12 May 92 18:10:54 At the mention of sword dancing, the grim northerner by the fireplace smiles. His hood no longer covering his head revealing short white hair, too white for his few years. He turns to Serene the barmaid, his voice softer now than before. "I would imagine this would be a un-mod...eh, un-kept inn, but nothing's like a little service, anyway!" Without taking his eyes off the barmaid, his hand disappears into his garments, reappearing with a couple of silver pieces. "Another drink, mylady!" (Whose brain-child is this? And forgive the length, but this is fascinating...- Laurie) He turns to stare into the fire. Then, as if he could read thoughts, he turns aroun to look at Serene, and speaks with a low voice: "There are many rumours as to how this place came to exist. I know only a few of them, but perhaps the right one. They say that in another place, another dimension, someone with immense powers, yea, perhaps the gods themselves, were gathered in a great, all encompassing hall. This hall had a name, it was called 'rec.games.frp', and it contained all the entities of this world, both large in power, and the small. The hall was crowded and dense, for even though it was a Hall of immense scale, some say it is without bounds as we know them, the entities were many, and the noise like thunder, and few would be heard. For this reason, and because many didn't want to listen to petty details of foreign worlds and planes, many of the lesser beings, and many of the greater also, decided that the One Hall, for so it was often called, should cease to exist, and instead there should be erected smaller Halls where the entities could come and go as they wished, and be heard by others who would. But many of the Great beings of the Hall would oppose such an idea, they were old and slow to accept change, and they would strike down any opposition with firm hand, and often with Magick. Thus began the great and terrible Flame Wars, to haunt all of Men and Elves for millenia to come. And the opposing entities were entitled 'splitters' and much looked down upon, but they they silently fed their hatred in their hearts, and the hatred grew every day! Then the day came, where one of the inhabitants of the hall, whether he was one of great power and wisdom, my tale does not say, but he was a most shrewd and cunning person, for he knew of a Hall where all the power in the multiverse was held, and to that hall he ventured, to bring forth his complaints to the omnipotent Rulers of The Multiverse! And the Rulers decided that if he could find many followers, yea, more that would follow him, than would otherwise, then should the One Hall cease to be the One Hall, and he should have his will. But even before it was decided upon by the Rulers, one entity of more Power than most, and maybe of less patience, decided that he would erect a Hall to shelter the Refugees that would stream forth from the crumbeling One Hall, and He, in his wisdom, erected the very inn where we now are! That is the story that I know. You may have heard it different, and perhaps closer to the truth than I, if you have, then speak! But I know one thing; The One Hall exists, for I have been there, and ere long, I shall go there again!" The man paused for a minute, feeling the silence in the previously noisy room. He then sat down at his table by the fire, looking into the glowing embers. -- » Ketil Malde, In real life: s082@ii.uib.no « » ISO-8859-1 rules Honk if you love unicorns! «
