What is it, a magic box? How exciting!" >Dougl claps his hands with childish delight. "Tell me how it works!" > Drax smiles towards Dougl, the red gauze around his body seeming to lighten for a moment. " The chest of Mackeldvar is much more than simply a magic box. Let me inform you of just a bit of its history. Many seasons ago, the man-dog known as Mackeldvar was fleeing from the pursuit of the evil nomad tribes known as the Scorpion Nomads. After being chased for a day and a night, Mackeldvar fell exhausted to the ground, only to find that for the last minutes he had been running on a surface of glass instead of sand. The nomads were at the sand-glass border, cursing loudly but obviously not willing to venture further into the glass area. Seeing what he perceived to be an oasis, Mackeldvar stumbled over and fell into the water's edge. He never arose. His last exertion had strained his heart beyond tolerance, and his body was not strong enough to contain his spirit. Over the days his body was taken by scavengers, but his essence remained. The years passed, and the sand once again begin to close over the glass. Generations later, the very chest which I now hold in my hands appeared in the markets of Generica. A seemingly ordinary chest, its very presence called out to those of us who value spirit and creativity. I was the first to reach the chest, and managed to obtain it before my fellow rivals. I gleaned the most brief history, given above, from this object, but was then forced to take refuge . Over the years, I have found that this chest retains some of the spirit of Mackeldvar and to receive a gift from this chest, one must present a price that will be paid, and rarely is this price in something so easily obtained as coinage. Anyone may obtain an item or a thing, for not all the gifts of the chest are physical, from the chest of Mackeldvar. I am only its keeper, and its friend. " So saying, Drax seems to smile down at the chest, and then return to his place standing beside the Shrouded Ones table, seemingly waiting for something unknown to others. ----------------------- jax@polyslo.calpoly.edu Another Keeper of the Archive
