Dougl sighs and looks at his feet. "I got myself a job," he says cheerfully,
then sighs. "Mama asked Karl the quartermaster to let me stay with him awhile
when she went down south to Rameshan... on business. Karl was an old friend
of Papa and Littlefair here. They all go way back. I think Karl was there
when Papa... when it happened to him. And that was before Karl had _his_
accident.
"It's a good town and Karl treats me well. And the Duke's a good man too.
Sometimes he lets me ride his horse up to the Point. And Karl lets me go
into taverns, which Mama never let me do. Mama says Karl spoils me rotten,
to make up for Papa and all.
"But you must tell me about Uncle William. He's such a brave exciting person!
Karl was too, and Papa, I guess, but Karl doesn't like to talk about it to me."
