At having his question returned, the man leans back in his chair and 
smiles.  His attire is rather common and well-worn, but neat, and his 
manner is very casual.  He has a close beard and longish hair and wears
an assortment of simple rings, a gold necklace that appears to be weighted
by something hidden under his shirt, and a single earring of three
fine silver chains dangling from one ear.  A pause, and he speaks:

"My name is Kaeleth.  I'm a historan and cartographer by profession - a 
traveller like yourself.  I'm in town to study in several private libraries.  
Dragon's Inn is far from a library, but I hang out in places like this to keep
watch for expeditions of these...'adventurers'...heading out on seldom-
travelled roads.  It really is the only safe way to travel to remote areas 
these days...actually, it's quite fun, too.  A little danger has its 
rewards...professional and otherwise.  I'm only a little help with 
this sword, by my true skills have a value of their own."  

"How did you come to this place?"
