The reader rubbed his eyes. He knew there would be no solace in prayer tonight. He shut the book with care. His hands played around the edges of the book while his eyes admired the craftsmanship. It was functional but artistic. And as with all books that belonged to the *Order, a goblet was etched into the cover of the book. The goblet is supposed to symbolize his Order's belief that knowledge is a cup from which everyone can drink. But didn't his brothers' realize that they gave the symbol meaning? Why couldn't they see that? Why? Several lives had already been lost! Why sacrifice more lives? he rubbed his eyes again. Perhaps he could think clearer in the morning. He stood up from the hard wooden chair. The flickering candlelight cast distorted shadows against the undecorated walls. He mad his way across the room to the wash basin. As he dipped his hands into the tepid water his mind raced back to the morning meeting with Brother Thadius and the council. True, the theft of the goblet was wrong. And although the way to recover the relic was clear, he stil didn't agree with it. Set a thief, to catch a thief. Indeed. With a shrig, Brother Lupo dried his hands on his plain brown cassock and got ready for bed. *Brotherhood of Divine Knowledge --Rainey & Gould jgould@adobe.com (Jim Gould)
