Slowly the eyes in the cat-head (which you now see to be a ]>pair of emeralds) begin to glow as the staff seems to be looking at the ring. ]>After a little while the glow fades, and Felix re-opens his eyes. ] ]"As I thought - an interesting piece of magic!" says Felix "Your wife spoke ]close to the truth when she said it would keep you safe, for indeed that seems ]to have been it's main purpose. It could not itself keep you safe, but it ]could transport you to a place of safety if you were in danger and nigh unto ]death. Unfortunately I do not see any way of controlling the destination - ]the ring simply chooses some place where you will be out of harm's way. A ]blessing, but not without drawbacks, to be sure!" ] ]Felix peers once more at the ring, and weighs it thoughtfully in his hand. ] ]"It is a little hard to tell, as the traces of recent use still cling to it, ]but I believe the ring to be capable of repeating this action in the future. ]I do not think, however, that it will be able to function again today, and ]maybe not for a longer period. I also see traces of further spellings deep ]within the enchantments, but I would not be able to ascertain their nature ]without a more detailed examination than I can perform in this place". ] ]"What troubles me" he adds "is that the ring did not transport you directly ]here - it snatched you from the snowfield where you and your friend Scarlet ]had been thrown. I fear that poor Scarlet may be left alone to face that ]danger which the ring had seen. Perhaps if you put your mind to it you ]could remember some more details of this snowy scene. Was it day or night? ]What could you see in the sky? How cold was it? Could you breathe easily, ]or was the air thin? Were there trees around? If so, what form did they ]take? Could you smell anything unusual? Answers to any of these questions ]might make it easier to find where you were. Quick - think now, while the ]vision is fresh in your mind!" ] ]Felix has risen almost to his feet as these questions tumble from his lips, ]and is gripping the table so hard that his nails are making marks in the ]wooden surface. Now he sits again, and takes another long draught from his ]tankard as he waits for Silverbreeze to reply. While drinking he takes a ]quick look round the Inn to see if anybody has noticed his slightly unusual ]behaviour. ] Silverbreeze's brow furrows as he tries to think of that place where he was for such a short time before arriving in the inn. "I heard... the howling of wolves. We were on a mountain, I think. The air seemed normal, though an odd smell hanged in it... the sky was mainly overcast... but I seem to recall a white and a red moon... by Delleb!... quite unlike Oerth's moons. "I am afraid, friend Felix, that that is all I remember about the place. It is unlikely that it is on this world, but, if it is, I will do something I should have done on my arrival." Silverbreeze stands and takes out a small metal object and a length of thread. Wrapping the thread around the metal, and letting it dangle from his hand, he recites some strange-sounding words. The metal bar spins crazily around, and then vanishes. Silverbreeze sits down with a sigh. "No luck at all. I thought to divine the location of a sword she carries. Either it is destroyed, or far more likely, is beyond the province of that spell. I can only hope that she is safe." Silverbreeze looks at Felix, and says, "Do you know of this world I describe? And, if you do not mind me asking, who are you and what is your tale?" -- -------------------------------------------------------------------- Merric Blackman merricb@mundil -------------------------------------------------------------------- "First things first -- but not necessarily in that order" -- The Doctor, "Doctor Who"
