Newsgroups: alt.pub.dragons-inn From: andsol@arcadien.owlnet.rice.edu (Andrew J. Solberg) Subject: ADMIN: more Ettiquette Suggestions Message-ID: <1992May28.203830.222@rice.edu> Date: Thu, 28 May 1992 20:38:30 GMT I have a few more suggestions for general ettiquette/usage on this net. Any and all comments, criticisms or replies are welcome. 1) Using Other Characters In Your Posts In the course of character interaction, situations are bound to arise where the poster must extrapolate some responses from his fellow characters. However, one should be careful to ensure that what YOU say happens is agreeable to all involved parties. One way you could do this is hash out a few details over e-mail. In particular, romantic advances, combat situations, and daring rescues should all be checked out with the other person(s). 2) Power Levels Getting into a touchy subject here...... it should be taken for granted that the most powerful character in the Inn is Nightstalker, whose player is responsible for the set-up and details of this group we enjoy so much. Players should be careful to strike a good balance between being strong enough to be heroic, but not approaching the realm of omnipotence. Arguments regarding whose character is best should be left off the group. 3) Attitudes I believe the vast majority of readers on this newsgroup would like to preserve the atmosphere of relative friendliness that so far we have all enjoyed. To this end, we should try to avoid playing characters who: a) Are violently hostile or confrontational b) Are overly impressed with their own abilities or items c) Insist on being first/best/fastest/strongest/best endowed. Of course, FLAMES are ABSOLUTELY forbidden. 4) Bandwidth Some players are currently running more than one character. This is not necessarily bad, and certainly has not yet caused any kind of band- width problem, but we should be aware of the need to conserve space. As a general rule, all players should try to stick to one or two characters at most; why would you really need more anyway? I have another comment, but it regards the purpose of this group and is more of a criticism than a specific suggestion. I believe we have gotten away from the original focus of this group. Do not read me wrongly! I am not saying that what goes on in APD-I is bad; I have quite enjoyed myself these past weeks! However, do correct me if I am wrong, but was this group not created as a forum to exchange ideas and storylines for rpg purposes? Was there not supposed to be more 'tale-swapping' and less MUD-style action? Is it not true that almost every newbie is confused over the purpose of this group when they first sign up, since they expected something completely different? I would rather see more storytelling and less role-playing on this newsgroup. The gaming is fun, but there are other places where that can be done. I will be disappointed if nobody replies! However, do not post flames; if you must get angry, e-mail me -- I have no desire to be publicly humiliated! -- Andrew Solberg |"Moving faster than a speeding bullet isn't andsol@owlnet.rice.edu | much use if you and it are headed straight Phone:713-529-8627 | for each other."
