I think you simply have to: first: get acquainted with the other character... see if tere is any Magic resistance or things like that. second: make the spell work. If the other player don't want it to work, he can always say "then the magic disappears"... Like in Willow when Bavmorda was getting stoned and shrugged it off... Paradak.
