From: jek@duke.cs.duke.edu (James E. Kittock) Newsgroups: alt.pub.dragons-inn Subject: [In and around pub] A Crier & new character Message-ID: <708375516@globe05.cs.duke.edu> Date: 12 Jun 92 18:58:38 GMT Just before the bards begin their music, those in the pub hear the bell and voice of a town crier wafting through the door, adverstising a little bit of this and a little bit of that... "...newly arrived from the distant reaches of the desert land of Alakazzar, a caravan, bearing rare spices, herbs, stones, ointments, ungeunts, cloths, pelts, oddities and other marvels of the Sandy Wastes..." "...Mr. Bolodoreus Lampblack is pleased to announce the opening of his new shop, The Musty Burrow, featuring the finest in pipes, tobaccos, exotic weeds, and other smoking paraphanelia... just a block from the Low City on Gryphon Street..." "...ship arrivals for the next ten days include the Moonlight Skipper, of No Particular Port, the Hartspeed, from the distant land of Albion, *cough* *cough* *harumph* *ack*..." The crying suddenly ends in a fit of coughing, and a tall, gaunt man sheepishly enters the famed Dragons Inn. His pointed beak of a nose and ungainly movements are made all the more amusing by his faux finery-- his clothes all the latest styles of the mercantile population of Generica, but made from (as any discerning eye can readily appraise) inferior materials. The crier tentatively walks up to the bar, somewhat amazed by the bizarre assortment of, well, mostly people at least, in the Inn. In a hoarse voice he asks "Somethink easy on my throat, please," and removes his sea-green satin cap-- the fashionable kind, with three points on top. -- James Kittock -- Duke class of 1992 -- Computer Science/Mathematics jek@cs.duke.edu | mcnc!duke!jek | PO Box 5750, Duke Station, Durham, NC 27706 Future graduate student in Computer Science, Stanford University, Autumn '92
