Message-ID: References: <1992Oct7.142149.59516@cc.usu.edu> Date: Wed, 7 Oct 1992 23:31:55 GMT Sir Bedamere HATED doing guard duty. Standing at the gates to the school, keeping out the riff-raff, constantly worrying about thieves and pranksters from the nearby College of Magic... Besides, after a solid two hours of detecting evil, his head started to hurt. So though he remained steadfastly Lawful Good, he was somewhat annoyed when the stranger came up to the gate. He was wearing a stiff leather jerkin, (uh-oh, thought Bedamere, another thief...), and had a long sword slung at one side (hmm... cant tell a heck of a lot from that, EVERYBODY uses long swords...) and a crossbow slung at the other (Bedamere pulled out his Player's Handbook and flipped through it... hmm... ok... still checks out.). A small shield was slung over his back. (Bedamere narrowed his eyes. Not a thief after all... well, THAT was a relief.) His dark brown hair was tied back in a ponytail which draped halfway down his> back, and his face looked as if he hadn't shaved in about a week and a half. (May be good, but ALMOST certainly isn't Lawful.) "Who goes there," said Bedamere. "I am William the Younger of Tell, and I am here to see my cousin, Dougl, who should be a second-year student here." Bedamere narrowed his eyes. "You aren't Chaotic, are you? You know that second-years are STRICTLY prohibited from fraternizing with chaotic or evil personages..." "I don't see why I should have to tell you that. I mean he IS my cousin, right?" "Look, you Chaotic types may like to find fault with the laws and make so many exceptions that there isn't anything left of em, but here at the Cuthbert School, we believe in a little Law and Order. And since you're so blatantly chaotic, I'm going to have to keep you out. Good night." "Look, what if I say that I'm willing to reconsider my chaotic ways?" "Come back when you have." "How bout if I say that the only way I will be able to do so is if I can talk to my cousin and listen to his wise council, as learned from the wise elders of the Cuthbert School." "Flattery will not be tolerated. Still, it would be a pity to see a Chaotic soul close to redemption go astray... I suppose that you may enter." William walked through the gate and headed off to find his cousin. ADMIN: now I KNOW i set the distribution wrong for this one B-). Sorry to all Rice folx for the repeated article... Also, Dennis... email me if you want to do Dougl's side of the conversation... otherwise I'll just make him a passive audience... -- Tom Scudder tomscud@ruf.rice.edu "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we have a full tank of gas, a half pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses."
