[ADMIN: I'm assuming that the drow has already returned from the Spitting
Cobra. If I'm worng, it won't be the first time.]

"Why me?" thought the merman, "First the phu (never capitalized) and now her.
Can't anyone speak modern common without archaic phrases?"

He addressed the dark elf, "Well, RuneCaster, I'm afraid you misunderstood my
intent. I do not want to learn more 'advanced' magics, but instead to refine
my understanding of what I already know.

"But, after that, I do not understand the rest of your explanation. Is it
dishonorable for you to teach, or to learn? And why, pray tell, don't
you believe yourself, RuneCaster?"

The use of the name he had given her was vital. Her true name, her secret,
Indigo had discovered within her mind. He had locked her name, indeed the
very fact that he knew her name, deep within his subconscious. If the
merman did not call her _something_, he would begin to search for a name, to
think of one. Then he would surely have found the secret, and then, he knew,
doom ensue.

But every great warrior, psionic or otherwise, has a flaw. Indigo was curious.
He wanted to know the dark elf's history, to know why her name was stripped
from her. He prepared another mind probe. He wanted to be subtle, for
although he was pretty confident that he wouldn't be caught (he thought back
to a mind flayer whose mind he had invaded a few years ago; he wasn't caught
then, so he really had nothing to fear from the inexperienced drow), but
on the slim chance he was, he did not know what the powerful dark elf was
capable of.

His best chance was to have her distracted. The next time someone talked to
her, he could strike.
