Message-ID: Date: 10 Nov 92 01:42:00 GMT The magical mirror distorted the images of those reflected slightly, but the image was more than clear enough to reveal the face of Garriot to the man who sat brooding in front of it. After watching for several minutes, he snapped, "Enough!," upon which the mirror immediately went blank. "So...Garriot still lives, and has found companions foolish enough to trust him," he muttered to himself, "I wonder how they would feel if they knew the truth about their "friend"? No matter...Garriot will die, and if his companions interfere...so will they." With that, he again turned to his mirror, searching the areas near the city for an appropriate location. ****************************************************************************** The walls of the city had been left behind over an hour ago as Garriot, Kyleen, Khisanth, Zebron, Brett, and the rest of the party entered a sun-dappled glen of oak and willow trees. A small smile crosses Garriot's face as they rode through the sun-speckled woods. "Something you can share with the rest of us?," asked Khisanth. Garriot chuckled and said, "It's nothing, really...just that, despite everything that's happened, I actually feel good. It's like this is what I was born to do. That must sound silly..." Khisanth shook her head and replied, "If it makes you feel this good, then I would say it was far from silly." She paused to take a swallow from a wineskin, then offer it to Garriot. As he turned in the saddle to take it, the first of the assassins' arrows struck him in the shoulder, knocking him from his horse. As Khisanth shouted a warning to the rest of the party and Garriot struggled to regain his feet, a dozen silent, grey-cloaked figures rose up and loosed a swarm of arrows at the party, then drew shortswords and rushed in from both sides. As they drew near, Zebron noted the telltale dark smear on the blades of the swords...
