Someone comes rushing in, spouting: >"Do you think gems and gold will buy the souls of gentle men!?!" Brent is confused by the outburst momentarily. But a quick look at Zebron causes him to make the link. No doubt the drow (in moon elf's "clothing") had repaid the only part of the debt the group could at this moment. The half-elf (who's apparently good at imitating a human :-)!) wishes he had thought of the idea himself. But Brent remains silent as Khisanth explains their position, telling their side of the story. Though it's obvious the young man isn't totally convinced, as he says: >"Before I tell you what I know of the murd... unfortunate incident, I would >like to see if anyone else has something else to add?" As a matter of fact, Brent DID, but Garriot was quicker to speak. >"Friend, if any of those at this table are to blame for the death of your >father and his friends, it is I." In a widely unexpected move, Garriot offers his sword to the newcomer, pledging his honor to finding the cause of this, and "offering" the newcomer a chance to kill him if he doesn't believe in Garriot's pledge. But the young man stammers, obviously believing in it, and unsure exactly what to say. Khisanth and Garriot have spoken their peace, and it appears most of the rest will remain quiet for now. Fine -- his turn then. Brent had experienced people of the some heart, and hopefully knew what would serve the best. "Well, good sir..." Brent starts. "Mathew." a shaky reply comes. "Mathew Dawnstrider." "Thanks.". Brent issues a small smile. He quickly introduces everyone else at the table. "Anyway, Mathew, why I have to say is this: no one here is REALLY to blame for the deaths. If we hadn't defended ourselves, we'd likely be dead, and the farmers would not be better off. You are not to blame for mistaking us for ones that follow an evil path, some of life's harsher realities can be hard to learn. The only one who should take any responsibility is the force that charmed them. That person wrongly controlled others, and shouldn't be allowed to do so again. I say we go after him as best we can." Brent fell silent again, glad to contribute where he could. Perhaps hanging around the "good" types was best, if that sort of talk got them out of the inn before the local militia could show up. Even with his and Mardan's standing as guards -- of other places --, it would be a situation best avoided, in his opinion. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Sander 344lwkc@cmuvm.csv.cmich.edu
