To tell the truth, I don't >know. And I don't think anyone here knows. Except perhaps Garriot, and his >memory of that is distorted." Mathew nodded a Brent gave him that answer. He didn't like not knowing who they were up against. >"You see, that was the initial reason for this group's formation -- to go to >Hawkesholme in hopes of restoring Garriot's memory." >"Of course, you know all too well of the events that have changed that. I'm >sure most of the others list stopping whomever did it as a reason now, as >you must. And I wouldn't be surprised if Hawkesholme contained the answer to >_that_ also, in one form or another." Mathew fingered his fathers locket as Brent referred to the Village incident. He toyed with the latch, but it didn't open like it never has since he could remember. >"Anyway, feel free to ask more questions -- you'll just 'owe' me, and I know >you're still wondering about things. Like the money..." he continues, >intentionally failing to contain a knowing smile." Mathew raised an eyebrow at Brent humor, he had no idea as to what he was referring to. Mathew had always assumed the money was theirs to give and had no reason to believe otherwise. He idle fingered his belt pouch where he had stuffed the jack of spades card. Just as he was drawing it out to show it to Brent. >"But first I want to applaud you for accepting Zebron's heritage as you did. >I must admit that your smile was more positive than I've ever seen for >someone meeting a Drow for the first time. I can tell that he likes not >having to prove himself also, even if he didn't say so." Mathew narrowed his eyes, and watched Brent for any sign that he was in on Zebrons joke. The laughter before about the money and now the absence of any jest perplexed Mathew. Mathew lowered his voice and leaned closer towards Brent "Your not telling me he really is a Drow are you?" His eyes wide, he looked back at Zebron who was at the edge of the camp looking outwards, his raven on his shoulder. He glanced quickly back at Brent trying to catch him slip up in the joke. The realization that Zebron was a Drow contrasted sharply with what he knew of the Drow race. Lots of questions pored though his mind "How long has he been away from the UnderDark? Was he always a Drow or is he a product of some Wizards curse? Why did he come to the surface?" The more he thought about Zebron the more he wanted to get to know the man. Mathew was silent for a long time -- Joe Carl Jr. "It ain't what a man don't know that makes him a jcarl@jabba.ess.harris.com fool, but what he does know that ain't so." -- Josh Billings
