Colin marched down the street to the keep where the City Guard was head-
quartered. He was still angry at the notion that the Guard was after Thk
the lizard-man (prince, really) on trumped-up charges. Still, knowing the
mentality of these sorts he realized that it would be best to ascertain the
exact nature of the charges before attempting to cause serious trouble for
this "Sgt. Thorpe" who was apparently in charge.

"Sgt." Thorpe. He grunted. Colin was familiar with the type. Grizzled
old non-coms, the backbone of any military organization, but bloody hidebound
and often sticklers for form. It would be a chore convincing him Thk meant
Generica no harm. Old hatreds die hard, and he knew the history of the city
and the lizard tribes.

He reached the gate. "State yer name and business," said the bored guard,
who nonetheless took note of the rangers obvious weapons.

"Colin Silvertree. I'm here to see Sgt. Thorpe with information concerning
a wanted lizard-man."

The guard's eyes widened a bit. He'd heard some rumors about a lizard-man.
He grabbed a small metal badge and handed it to the half-elf. "Wear this while
yer inside. Thorpe's in the HQ building on the right side of the parade ground
inside."

Colin nodded to the guard, affixed the badge to his tunic, and strode down
the tunnel to the open area beyond, his critical warrior eye noting strengths
and weaknesses. He found the building easily enough, and went in.

It consisted primarily of one large room, with some small offices around the
periphery. Papers were strewn everywhere, and the din of shouting men was
considerable. It looked like controlled chaos.

"Could someone direct me to Sgt. Thorpe? I need to speak with him." A thumb
indicated a cubicle to the back of the large room, and was accompanied by a
small smile.

Colin headed for the indicated spot and went around the movable wooden walls
to find a somewhat harried-looking but nevertheless attractive woman.

  She looked up. "Yeah?"

  "I'm looking for Sgt. Thorpe."

  "Well you found her."

Colin blinked. Thorpe was a woman! Oops.
