since I've forgotten what they were.]


   Mister Boddy set down the receipts for Heidi's eighth month of business and
went out front to get himself a bowl of vanilla yogurt. As the dispenser
poured, he reflected on the recent slump caused by the absense of chocolate.
Eustace was now a month overdue in bringing some from the supplier. Just as he
sat down to eat and think, Dana ran into the store.
   "Pirates got Eustace!" he yelled, wildly waving a sheet of paper in his
left hand.
   "What?" Boddy asked. "Let me see." He took the note and read it. "There's
no way we can raise that cash. Where's Evan?"
   "Back at the house," Dana told him.
   "Get him."

   "Do you want something to eat?" the serving girl asked Eustace. He picked
at his food, then shook his head. She nodded silently and took the plate away
to the kitchen.
   Eustace sighed and walked back to his straw bed. A few minutes later, his
captor, Nobeard, strode into the room, carrying a small sheet of paper. "Good
news, Merchant," he crows.
   Eustace perked up. "Boddy's here to pay?"
   "Almost," Nobeard told him. "I've been sent word that he has sent Evan and
Dana to negotiate your release. They may be here within the month, and then
you'll be freed, possibly." He chuckled menacingly.
