Suddenly, a spiked metal ball, a bit larger than Eustace himself, crashed through the hull, causing the ship to sway wildly, then settle with a leftward lean. Running up the stairs to escape the incoming water, Eustace tripped over Kernsch. "What hit us?" Kernsch demanded, grabbing the merchant. "A big metal ball!" Eustace stammered. Kernsch grimaced. "The place is littered with them. Get to a lifeboat!" He shoved Eustace toward the side, where more cowardly sailors were fighting to board the tiny craft. Second mate O'Neill waved them away with his scabbard, sending a couple fleeing over the edge. Eustace and O'Neill got in the boat, which dropped to the water. Together, they rowed away, Eustace keeping his eyes ahead at the open sea. Despite repeated warnings from the more experienced rower to conserve energy, the merchant fought the oars for almost an hour before he was scared into stopping by a shadow over his head. "Ya know, Ah hate the idea that my men wasted so much time and effort for a bunch of dried beans!" a voice called from above. Eustace turned around and stared up into the pirate's clean-shaven face. Putting on an air of disgust, Eustace stood in the boat. "How dare you attack a Grand Merchant of Cornea!" The pirate captain and his men laughed heartily. "Of where? A cornfield?" he taunted. Eustace's disgust became genuine. "Cornea! On the continent of Alpha, where they know how to deal with petty nuisances like you!" The pirate's men feigned fear at the merchant's threat, but the leader's response was different. "I like you! Ya got moxie!" he chuckled. He turned to his first mate. "Have them both put in the hold with the others." *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* / K. M.
