                            Introducing Winter

The waves of the Great Blue crashed against the empty docks stirring
the jetsam into a froth of mystery. Beneath the docks, the pages of an
ancient book washed onto shore, followed by the remanants of the book itself,
tired, old, and rotted from its passage by sea. If there had been a
creature living in the darkness where the book lay, it would have seen a
sudden glow surround the discarded parchment coupled with a sudden flurry
of pages as the book rebound itself, the pages filling it's leather covers
as if its decomposing were being reversed. Rebound, the old book lay in the
moist sand, its cover of leather was decorated with arcane symbols of the
planets, and ancient forgotten runes decorated it here and there, inscribing
the text with words of power best left forgotten. In the center of the book
a face worked out of leather peered with shut eyelids into the darkness.

If that mythical creature who lived beneath the docks had indeed been
there, it would have noticed a waterlogged corpse washed up on the sand.
And if the creature had looked closely, it would have seen the sides of the
corpse heaving with the struggle of regaining its breath, and the sudden
stream of saltwater that surged from the body's mouth as the contents of
its stomach surged out onto the sand, mixing gently with the waves to float
off into the sea.

The body heaved itself upright and revealed a man dressed in a rotted
and stained white robe, decorated here and there with pieces of seaweed with
sand sticking persistantly to every inch of cloth that it could take hold of.
The man's face was young, almost to the point of being a boy's, but for the
wrinkles of age that surrounded the eyes, and the jagged scar on the left
cheek. His hair was black, streaked with silver and reached nearly down
to his waist beneath the robe, golden beads were braided into several of the
locks and they shined hollowly into the dark. Bright eyes peered out of the
dirty face, and shifted color from green, to blue, to black repeatedly,
and as if deciding which he was most content with settled to a piercing
blue.

[where am I] he thought as his eyes scanned the underbelly of the dock,
his form gave a little shiver at the cold from his drenched clothes.
[more importantly, who am I] his mind was blank of any indication of who
he was, this disturbed him profusely. Searching his thoughts he at last
came upon a memory of falling from a far height, and crashing into the cold
darkness of the Great Blue, it seemed that he had been pushed, from what
he could not remember but he did recall the sound of wind rippling through
a vast sea of white cloth far above him as he fell.

[Time to sort that out later], he decided, his eyes noticing the book
for the first time. [Well now this at least looks familiar], he reached out
and grabbed the book. As soon as his fingers touched its cover the closed
eyelids fluttered open, and stared at him. "What the hell!", the man cried
as he leaped back from the volume, the sudden shock pounding his heart.

To his amazement, a nasaly voice boomed out of the things mouth
"Oh knock it off you stupid moron, see if I ever take a cruise with you
again, I wanted to go visit a nice safe already explored village, but you
just had to go gallavanting across the ocean, buy the way did you know
you're soaked to the bone and will most likely die of hypothermia wich would
more than serve you right."

"What are you," the man's stammering voice shook its way out of
his salt cracked lips as he assumed a position as far from the text as the
cramped space would allow.

"Are you blind or something, you ignorant descendent of a monkey,
I'm quite obviously a book, use your feeble ape brain." The man peered
closer at the books face as it continued to spew out insults concerning
his questionable ancestry.

[Great, stuck under a dock, in the middle of no where with some
demon possesed volume, and not so much as a name to curse myself by] he
thought to himself. "Instead of insulting me maybe you could help me
out by telling me who I am," he queried the now sneering book.

"Oh great now you've lost your memory too, first your kingdom,
and now your miserable rememberences. For your information, you currently
call yourself 'Winter', don't look at me like that I didn't choose it,
and you were at one time a person of great importance, don't look so pleased
such is not the case now do to your ingnorant bumbling."

"Winter, eh, I kind of like it, but now where in the Nine Hells am
I, and how do I go about getting warm?"

"Listen oh great stupid one, you lie upon the beach of a City known
as Generica and as for getting warm I'd suggest an inn."

The man picked himself up off the sand and hesitantly took up the
book and tucked it beneath his arm. "Hey, [umphh, mmjjhg] get me out of
your stinking armpit you baboon" the book yelled out at him "I don't know
why I put up with a smelly ape like you." Winter shoved the book further
beneath his arm muffling any other complaint that the text might have had.
Carefully he climbed out from the docks, his eyes squinting in the bright
sunshine outside and headed for the nearest inn.
