This is not part of the regular, haphazardly put out, [wiz] thread,
but it is about Feldegast and some of his companions. Note the Merlin
referred to is not the great wizard of Arthurian legend. This comes
from a campaign; when my 3rd level wizard had to choose the name of
a 0th level henchmen, I chose Merlin (kind of to show my ego). Shen
by the way is a 0th level assassin/ninja/warrior (?).

"Here, Merlin, fetch ..."

...........................

It was larger than any man, near nine feet in height, with arms that
hung low, near the ground. Slabs of muscle rippled underneath its fur.
The white hair, tangled and ice encrusted, crackled as it moved. Each
stride was accompanied by an exhalation of breath between yellowed tusks,
below a flattened ape shaped nose. Over one shoulder of the Yeti lay the
slumped body of Shen, red blood oozing slowly out of his wounds and into
black garb. As it walked snow crunched underneath massive feet, cracking
into knife sized fragments of ice and ground into white powder.

In the Man-beast there was a hunger. Its stomach growled, its lips
quivered, and within its cavernous tooth filled mouth it salivated for
the flesh of the Man it carried. Good eating, such soft blood rich flesh,
and although the bones would be fragile the marrow within could be sucked
easily enough.

A figure detached itself, unseen, from a pine tree behind. Heavy robes,
normally a dusk shaded blue covered haphazardly with silver glyphs, now
had a mottled hue all browns and greens. Even the wizard's hat and skin
shared the magicked colors, his eyes emerald and clear. His hands reached
up and then came back down and then there was something between them.

A bubble, transparent and small, formed out of the air. A moment later
a flame, bright and filled with a devouring crimson glee danced within.
Then the sphere grew large, 5 inches in diameter and the fire within
exploded to match the confines. Where before it had been a spark, now
it was a maelstrom of heat. Sweat beaded, dried and froze on the Wizard's
brow. His skin grew tight, muscles bunched, as he walked briskly down
the path the monster had taken. Tall and foreboding, the Man's face was
undescribably grim.

A blurred figure ran between the trees towards the Yeti, some distance
from the Wizard. A sword flashed silver in young gloved hands. The
Yeti whirled with a snarl as the youth closed, blue eyes glaring, face
stretched into a grotesque mask with its tusks revealed. Shen fell off
its shoulder as the creature leapt forwards with claws striking. Merlin
bravely thrust with his long blade, and struck into the creatures gut.
Hot blood fell upon the snow and sizzled as it gave up its heat. A red
stain grew on the monster's belly. And then Merlin ducked one massive
handed blow. The huge bulk suddenly shifted and its other hand slammed
into the youth, driving the air from his lungs and crushing ribs. Merlin
was thrown aside, his mind striving to hold on, but giving away to
blissful unconsciousness as green spots caused by pain turned into a
field of black. He slumped.

The creature looked up, aware of the Wizard now, but by then it was
too late. The globe leapt from Feldegast's hands like a thing alive,
crossing the distance in a thunderous flash. As it travelled there was
the sense of it stretching, growing longer, but it was difficult to
tell for certain.

The bolt spread as it struck the Yeti full force. Fire ate through
skin and muscle and bone, and into the air on the other side. A gaping
cavern lined with black carbonized flesh, smooth like ebony stone,
devoured the man-beast, from neck to crotch. Its heavy arms, the head,
the legs, all crumpled.

Feldegast walked forwards with haste. He looked over Shen's injuries,
and then those of his apprentice. They would live. He remained grim
throughout although hope kindled in his heart. The death of a close
comrade, or this courageous youth, would be hard to deal with. Feldegast
shook out of his reverie. Erik had lead the beast's brethren away, but
they could return at any moment. There was much to do and little time.

With that thought in mind he set to work.
