A glass bowl filled with water and coarsely chopped herbs and flowers rested on a small pile of volcanic rock. A quiet word in the language of flame turned the rocks red; the room began to fill with spiced steam. The aroma of the herbal infusion filled the small white-tiled room, almost like incense. There was light, filtering through some of the tiles, and a carved stone bench in the middle, which Erik was lying on. There were no doors. Lex reached out and gently traced the outline of the bruise on Erik's back. "Wow! You really got hit hard." His hands flickered briefly, smoke and wind and fire and steam. The purple-black discoloration vanished. "SS! that's ... oh. Thank you." Erik stretched, gingerly feeling the soreness in his body. "That was incredible." "What, fixing your back?" Broad, tanned fingers gently stroked the ShadowMaker's finely muscled back. "No, silly boy -- Mmmm. You have a week to stop doing that --" he said, sighing. "No, the view from space, and riding in with the meteor shower, and helping those folks in the wrecked ship. Incredible." "I never told you I would be boring." Erik felt a slippery sensation on his back, where Lex was rubbing -- the pressure was intense, but frictionless. He moaned as tight muscles were unkinked by expert hands. "Wonderful ... " Erik moaned, as Lex moved down from his shoulders to his lower back, then hips, buttocks and legs. He lost track of time. The gentle, persistent pressure gradually spread from one place to another, stroking lightly or pressing with exactly the pressure needed to make a tense, sore muscle yield. He drifted off into a slight drowse. After a while he realized that the massage was still happening but it was spread over his whole body, even his head and face, and that it was becoming rather erotic. He opened his eyes, and didn't see Lex in the room with him -- he tried to sit up, but the gentle pressure grew tighter over his whole body, just enough to stop him from moving for a second. He could see his arm, outstretched before him, a thick sheen of oil or whatever other lubricant Lex had been using covering all his skin. As he watched, its surface undulated and rippled rhythmically. He felt a strange rolling sensation across his other arm, and his legs, that travelled up over his body leaving behind a cool dryness. The liquid on his arm started flowing, gradually pouring out into a transparent golden sparkling shape, the curves and outlines he remembered. It crossed his body, caressing him in several places with just enough pressure not to be ticklish, and then he felt it leave his hair and his face. <> the transparent shape said. <> Erik watched the liquid un-spread itself from his arm, leaving the skin behind clean and dry, and then in a second the humanlike shape was Lex, smiling gently. "What was that?" Erik purred. "Elemental form." "Elemental of massage oil?" Erik tried to laugh but he was too relaxed. All he could manage was a few groans of pleasure. "It's a variation on water." "I like it." He stretched his muscles and found them loose, almost liquid in their relaxed motion. "Good. Cause I want to do it again in a minute." "Is this what you were talking about before, us learning what the differences between us are?" "Yep. See, Love, the problem I would have is that I'm human in this body, and humans have all these interesting reflexes and drives." "Why is that a problem?" Erik half-growled, reaching out to grab Lex's hand. "Humans want to merge, to become one person. It's what gives human sex its delightful aspects." Lex sighed. "'Raf would have been a better lover for you. He doesn't have that particular problem like I do." "Why is that?" Erik felt his arm tingle as Lex kissed the back of his hand gently. "'Raf is me, in every respect, except that he's what I would be if I had been born a satyr instead of a human. And satyrs don't feel the urge to merge, they always know their edges." "Why does he have all the fur then?" Erik sat up, pulling himself closer to Lex and nuzzling into his muscular shoulder. Lex moved his arm around Erik to accomodate the cuddling. "Something Lancos did. He and 'Raf were talking after the concert where they drew power for our fight with the `R' entity. When Lancos asked for his heart's desire, it was for 'Raf to be able to return to his original self. That would have gotten rid of the Gift that grants heart's desire, and lost us the battle, but paradox wouldn't let it happen. So it shifted the bindings on the Gift instead, so 'Raf, unlike me or Miro or Kev, can still change shape for more than a few minutes at a time. Trouble is, he's stuck with part-animal shapes." "Hence the fur. I didn't know you were limited in your shapeshifting." Lex smiled wryly and stroked Erik's hair. "Yeah. I can turn into any of my old shapes, but it takes work to hold them. And I can turn into elemental form, but water's easiest because my gift is lodged there in my Water node. That's why I'm such a big boy right now," he said, flexing his left arm. "When I was being a bodybuilder, years ago, I had my primary focus in Water for a while, because it made me stronger. Earth made me too slow." "It looks good on you," Erik said, stretching. "Wanna try something?" Erik looked up at Lex. "What do you have in mind?" "Well, the human reflex would make me want to combine with you, if we had sex together. I don't have that reflex when I'm in elemental water form. And while you still have it, when you're in your air body, you can choose to override it." Erik nodded eagerly, and his GREY cloak flowed towards him from the chair where it had been draped. He gripped the edge of the cloak. "Some of our ShadowMakers, when we first developed the use of the shadow cloaks, became addicted to something like that. Even after we brought a Spirit specialist in to separate their personalities, three of them stayed mind-bonded. I guess they were afraid of regaining their individual identities and being alone again." Erik smiled slightly and looked up into Lex's eyes. "I take it you can keep that from happening to us?" "If I couldn't then I shouldn't have been allowed to leave home." "Then let's get started." "After we do this once or twice," Lex said, stroking Erik along the shoulders, "we should be able to tell what our edges are, so human style sex would become less...dangerous." "Mnnm," Erik moaned, as Lex pulled him closer, sliding along his body. There was a moment of strangeness as the hard body holding him became suddenly very slippery, and then he was surrounded, except for his nose and mouth, completely encased in a bubble of water that was holding and caressing every inch of his skin. He floated for a few minutes, lost in the sensation, then drew his GREY cloak into his body, becoming Air... The floating bubble of water suddenly held a transparent Erik-shaped hollow. He was air, a bubble that might dissolve into the water but didn't ... he allowed himself to split into two bubbles and the sensation of being held and caressed doubled, the pleasant touch along the surface which contained him also stretched with a sensation of holding, sustaining, wrapping. He split again, and again, each division increasing the pleasure until it was a hurricane blowing through his thoughts, catching and carrying away anything coherent. He became a scatter of a thousand thousand tiny motes of air, each held from the water by surface tension. The sensations were intolerable in their sharpness. <> the water spoke to him, washing from one end of his mind to another. He stopped, slowly becoming accustomed to the intensity, though it didn't diminish, and he reached out his thoughts to touch the voice. His perspective slowly changed -- he was water, being stretched across thousands of surfaces, dissolving the trapped gasses into himself while evaporating his own mass into the bubbles. They exchanged substance, yet remained apart. How easy and tempting it was to give in and let the water absorb him, but he kept his identity. The water started currents within himself, bringing the bubbles in contact with as much of his mass as possible. <> The voice came from within him, the water part. <> he replied to the voice, and heard it echo into the air he held within himself. The security and closeness was almost overwhelming. <> The air swirled and he felt his perspective changing again, he was air _and_ water, perfusing and churning together. <> <> <> The turbulence was growing more violent. <> The spinning increased, and he felt suddenly like he was passing completely through, overwhelmingly aware of the other... The room was filled with steam as the whirlwind steadied, and then coalesced into a blond man, lithe and athletic, wearing a GREY cloak. He was breathing hard, knowing that every nerve in his body had just been stretched to its limit. The steam began to condense on the walls, then ran together into a puddle that rose to take human shape, suddenly going opaque, becoming a tall powerful blond man with eyes that changed color. He sat gasping on the floor. "Gah. Oh my." He stood, shaking. "Erik, that was great." "We'll have to do it again..." Lex grinned. "Now?" "Uh, no, I'm exhausted." "OK. <>" The raised marble dias vanished, and the tile walls of the room were replaced by polished wood. There were lights in each corner of the ceiling, and against one wall a big bed that a centaur couple could have slept on. "Is that a hint?" Erik leered. "No, you need to sleep a while. C'mere." Lex pulled Erik onto the bed, letting him lie back on his chest. The GREY cloak flowed over them like a blanket. "That's nice. Could you turn down the lights?" Erik relaxed, and the lights dimmed, while the scent of the bowl of herbal incense filled the room. Love and Peace and The Quiet Sleep Of Tired Lovers, -The Dreamer-
