Marran'helarr nestled down in an old cloak, trying to make herself
comfortable.  She looked up at her mind-mate, who lay on the bed.
Khisanth was already fast asleep,  her dreams for once untroubled by
strange fears and shadows.  Alaric slept lightly beside her, and the
afterglow of their joining  wrapped about them as tightly as the coppery
tresses of Khisanth's hair.

Marra had to admit she was rather fond of Alaric;  he was good for her
mind-mate, and added the protection Khisanth would never admit she lacked.
He was also one of the few things standing between Khi and insanity...Khi's
awareness of her Imrryri heritage did strange things to her mind, and in 37
years was still learning to integrate the alien thoughts into her
all-too-human psyche.  Sometimes it was all Marra could do keep from
getting caught up herself.

She turned away, and looked instead at the colourful, entwined patterns 
on the borders of Khisanth's cloak. 

The first pressure came from within, catching Marra completely by surprise.
She quickly damped the mindlink, not wishing to disturb Khisanth's much-needed
sleep.  She was ready when the second came, preparing herself as had many
cath-adar before her.  She sent a brief message to her raven-friend Dusk
	* It is time. *

Khisanth woke to find Alaric sitting on the floor by Marra.  In his hands,
a small fuzzy black shape looked up at him, downy wings folded delicately
upon its tiny back...
