Jaerodyn paced outside the cavern restlessly. His friends were all
gathered beside the waterfall waiting and talking in low tones. Kieriah,
sitting slightly apart from the rest, watched the cave mouth with a speculative
expression on her lovely features. The newcomer, Laurenth, was
talking to Tierge and Durstrin, getting to know them.

After a few minutes had passed, Jaerodyn halted and came to stand
behind his sister. He put his hands on her shoulders and squeezed briefly.
"It will be okay, Kia," he murmured, as much to reassure himself as her. When
she did not answer, he came before her and knelt.

Kieriah turned her eyes to look at the young Lyorn. "I'm not sure
about this new person you brought Jaerodyn," she said with a frown. Jaerodyn
cocked his head and looked up at her questioningly.

"Why is that? He seems like he truly wants to help."

The Lyorn girl shook her head, making her long braid swish back and
forth. "I don't think... I mean..." she started uncertainly, but drew her
brows together in frustration. "I don't know! But for my own reasons, I'm
inclined to be wary."

Her brother nodded. "That is your right of course. But I for one
refuse to let go of any hope or opportunity of helping Aleric survive this."
He took her hands and held them tightly between his. "Listen to me, we've done
everything we know how to do for him. I know you love him and want to be the
one to help him, and don't think I don't feel the same way!" Jaerodyn paused
here for emphasis as well as to swallow hard several times and choke down the
quaver that threatened his voice. "But now is the time to let someone else do
what he can."

Kieriah looked at her brother and her green eyes darkened and filled
with tears. As her lower lip started to tremble slightly, Jaerodyn reached out
and enfolded her in his arms and held her tight, rocking her gently. He
murmured over her head and stroked her hair while she dug her fingers into his
waist with a strong grip. He winced.

Nearby, Ruel tried not to watch the siblings who were absorbed in their
grief. He was worried about his friend Aleric, but his heart ached for the
misery of the fiery Kieriah. He resolutely turned his head away and kept his
eyes glued to the tumbling water.

	"We'll never survive....."

"Nonsense. You're only saying that because no one ever has."
