Story: Part Seven

L'ai Ch'i glared at the Boss. "Why don't you just go away? I'm
giving up all of your interdimensional do-gooding and multi-universal
world saving and so forth."

"Oh, you are?" the black giant rumbled ominously.

"Yeah. I've paid back all of my debts, done penance for all of
my sins, outlived all of my enemies and all of my friends, too.
You don't have any more handles on me. My conscience is clear
and I'm done."

The Boss frowned, "So what did you think you were going to do?
Go back where you came from? You won't get away from me that
easily. I need you and I know how to get your cooperation any
time I need it."

L'ai Ch'i laughed, and then winced as his hangover awakened fully.
"Like I said, not anymore. It's over. Say what you want, I don't
care. And I think I'll retire right here in Generica. It seems a
pleasant enough place, for now. Quiet compared to most places I've
been. Yes, I think I'll retire and just live out a more or less
natural life, then die a natural death."

"Cirrhosis most likely," the Boss scoffed. "I know you. A few
weeks of boredom and you'll come running back."

L'ai Ch'i's face clouded. "YOU are getting boring, BOSS," he
snarled. "So just go away before I try something we'll both likely
regret."

The Boss sighed deeply. "Very well. You know how to reach me if
need be."

"Yeah, yeah," the little man sighed and pointedly lay back down
and pulled the blankets up around his head.

The Boss shook his head and quietly stepped out into the hall.
"Thank you, L'ai Ch'i," he whispered. "You are just where I want
you to be." And silently, the giant black wizard vanished.
