The battle was almost played out. The last of the goddess Qira's
forces were holding the sanctuary gates, but only just. What had
begun as a war spanning half the known world, had come down to
this small but deadly battle. The dead were everywhere, and still
falling. The foul creatures were feeding as they killed, feeding on
the souls of the fallen. In the end, Simrax and the other six
remaining Defenders of Qira knelt to pray. As their minds drifted,
they heard the moaning of the souls departing their useless bodies.
They attempted to speed them on their way, but the Defenders were
tired. they had fought the battle until its end, and they had lost.
As if from a distance Simrax heard the door splintering under the
assault of the unholy ones. But still he prayed for the deads' souls.
He could hear the screaming of the souls, as they were rent by the
unholy ones. But still he prayed. He could hear the screaming as the
unholy ones waded into his fellow defenders. But still he prayed.
The concetration of his prayer continued to grow, until at last he
lost consciousness and wandered alone through the realms of bright
light.

Simrax awoke in a strange place, tired and sore. Looking about he saw
no familiar landmarks. He seemed to be in some kind of city, like
none he had known before. A feeling of nervousness came over him as
he began to wander. He must find a temple that would take him in, he
needed food and rest, and had only a small amount of silver on him.
As he wandered further, the feeling of nervousness grew, until he felt
a distinct feeling of evil. He hefted his giant mace, and the feeling
of evil became almost unbearable. As he rounded the corner, he saw a
man wielding a warblade, set upon by dark creatures. The feeling of
evil increased to the point where it became unbearable and something
inside him snapped. He charged forward into battle, swinging his mace
in a wide arc, taking the nearest creature by surprise. It screamed
and turned on Simrax as the mace bit deep, burning into the creature
in a bright flash of searing light.
