Kelanen crept toward the compound's courtyard wreathed in a
spell of cloaking. A listless wind eddied and whirled about his
booted feet. Unsheathing his two handed warblade, he crossed
a small cobblestone walkway toward a shadow enshrouded arch.

A barely audible hiss sounded beyond the arch within the court-
yard. Peering past the archway, Kelanen's magesight revealed
a muscled eight foot tall creature of darkness. Two blood red
embers burned where the eyes should have been. The ember eyes
turned directly to stare at Kelanen's own.

A bone chilling fear ate away at Kelanen's resolve. The Dread's
body shifted with cat like grace to bar Kelanen's entry to the
courtyard, its bulk looming frighteningly large in the night's
gloom.

"Foolish human," it rasped, "do you think to pit your puny
magic against my own?!" A clawed ebony hand grasped the torso
of one of the many broken bodies lying mangled in the courtyard.
"They too thought they could resist my might." Its hollow laugh
echoed errily off the compound's stone walls.

Dropping the cloaking spell, Kelanen raised his warblade. Mage-
fire crackled and burned bright along the sword's blade. The
light thrown off by the warblade illuminated a grisly scene of
carnage. "You will pay for what you've done Hellspawn," Kelanen
sobbed. "My home...destroyed," he whispered in shock. Shifting
his weight, Kelanen assumed an offensive stance.

The Dread narrowed its crimson eyes. "Yeees...come! Let us
finish it here and now!"

Rushing forward, Kelanen attacked using the sword form, Heaven's
Fire. With a whirlwind of sword strokes, he advanced on the
Dread. Despite the Dread's seeming bulk, it danced nimbly out
of reach of Kelanen's flaming blade.

The Dread roared a frightful curse and slashed its own clawed
hands towards Kelanen's face. Desperately, he backed away using
the Iron Tower sword defense form, barely keeping the midnight
creature's attacks from connecting.

The Dread lulled in its attacks giving Kelanen a moment of
respite. Taking advantage of the sudden stalemate, he raised
his left hand in the air to point towards the Dread's chest.
A column of silver blue magefire roared through the air to
impact the heart of the creature's bosom. Blue black wisps of
smoke rose to the sky. The stench of burned flesh overwhelmed
the courtyard.

An earth shattering scream reverberated off the compound's
walls. The Dread's eyes smoldered a deep rust red, its outrage
etched over its contorted features. It approached Kelanen
heedless of the flaming sword, swatting it out of the human's
grasp. "Now you DIE!" it roared.

Backing away, Kelanen slipped on a blood smeared cobblestone
and tumbled, losing his footing. The creature advanced like
an oncoming night tide. Desperately, Kelanen conjured up a
brilliant ball of magelight in front of the onrushing Dread.

The blinded demon quickly weaved its own foul magic, calling
forth darkness to extinguish the damnable light. Sensing his
light spell faltering, Kelanen rushed around the Dread's bulk
snatching up his fallen warblade. "This is for the souls of
those you've killed this tainted night!" Kelanen cried. With
a battle cry of revenge, he plunged the sword's blazing blade
to the hilt, into the Dread's broad back.

"ARRRGH! Damn you human...my brethren will avenge me!" Foul
black blood trickled from the corners of the nightspawn's maw.
"You cannot withstand our might!" it shrieked. "I will see
you in Hell!" The Dread slumped listlessly over onto the
cobblestone ground.

"And so it begins..." Kelanen sighed wearily, "the Dark Ones
have found a means of escape from their imprisonment. I'll
need to find others to help me recapture them."
