Morning mist blanketed the valley diffusing the early morning
sunlight into a kind of opaque mote shower. Kelanen surveyed
the leftover burned rubble of his father's stronghold. Lord
Aldorion's home was now nothing but ash and memory. After his
battle with the Dread, Kelanen had summoned magefire once more
to consecrate his former home as a funeral pyre for those
destroyed by the Dread.

Now I must seek out that which will reimprison the escaped
Dread, he mused. "I will need to find others to aid me in this
quest," he voiced aloud to the morning mist. "I will search
beyond the Void to find these others. There are none left here
with the power to accomplish what needs to be done."

Turning his back upon his former home, Kelanen opened an iri-
descent portal through the Void. Behind him, four dark shadows
rose up from the earth, slowly taking physical form. As Kelanen
stepped into the gateway, the four half shadows flitted in after
him.

Kelanen's magesense detected the four Dread as the the Void re-
sealed itself behind him. Whipping around, he raised his staff
focusing a diamond brilliant ball of magelight at the tip.
Flaring like a magnesium torch, the magelight banished the
immediate darkness revealing the four looming Dread.

Laughing, the lead Dread smiled exposing razor sharp fangs.
"Your light has no affect upon us here," it boomed. "We are of
the Void. In the end there is no light that shines in this
darkness between worlds. Not even yours!" As one, the four
demonic creatures poured their will over the glaring magelight
slowly dampening its brilliant shine to a mere ruddy glow.

Feeling his magic being smothered, Kelanen reached out and
twisted a portion of the Void with his mind, desperately working
a portal to anywhere open. A sliver appeared in the Void
showing beyond it a sleeping city in the growing evening.
Flinging himself through, he crashed upon a limestone paved
street tossing aside his staff and rolling to his feet un-
sheathing his warblade all in one fluid move. With some inn
behind his back he turned and faced the four nightmarish figures
that emerged from the still open portal.
