Joy belongs to Liralen Li; Raphael belongs to Bernie Hsiung (who has

It was dark outside the wall of the world.

The only light, the only point of reference in the nothing, was
provided by a tiny crack in the wall. The fog-tendrils of reality that
leaked out made a perfect sphere, a lure and a beacon for anything
that lived out here, in the hard cold emptiness between.

A blur of malice and emptiness lurched away from the opening, back
into the concealment of the nothing.

Someone stepped through the crack. He appeared human enough,
if you ignored the wings that extended from his back, each more
than twice his height. The wings, and the light -- it wasn't so
much blocked by his body as magnified by it.

Raphael hung poised, wings extended. The malice shrouded itself
in the surrounding gloom, then suddenly moved towards him. He swept
his hand down, gathering the light into a lance that he held ready.

"Thou may'st not come here," he said gently. The thing lurched into
the sphere of reality and Raphael almost winced, seeing it for what
it really was.

It blurred to his left, and bounced off the sound of chimes and
laughter. It blurred to the right, and ricocheted off the sunlight
gilding a feather tied in the hair of a child, back into the dark.
The echo of a mother's joyful laughter followed it as far as the
edge of nothing. The thing whirled along lines of stressed nonbeing
and approached slowly, a stalking malevolence.

"I tell thee twice, thou may'st not come here." Raphael drew on
the Fire of the Beacon and the lance became solid.

His enemy struck again, growing claws like shards of ice and
the edge of shadows. The lance snapped down and around
in a circle, shattering claws and melting shadows. Light
poured through him, tearing away the cloaking dark. What the
light revealed, fled in panic along the hollow lines between.

"It's gone, it's gone," a voice said behind him, sing-song.

"But why did it think it could come here? What did it want?
It wasn't a Reaverspawn, but it was doing their work. Though I
don't understand why it was trying to torment that vampire."

"Raphael," the voice said, laughing, "come back inside the world
and let us fix this hole." The singer drew him back, and he pulled
in the reality that had leaked to make a plug, to seal the tiny breach
in the world. The light smoothed under his hand, gilding the tiny
blond hairs on his arm. Something inside stirred -- the skin was
the color of pale white marble, and that seemed wrong somehow. It
seemed like it should be tanned a dark golden brown.

Raphael shook his head abruptly. Something had just awakened in
him, something he had borrowed too long ago.

"I think it's time to give you back," he said, looking at his
pale hand where it rested on the world wall.

=======

A year and a day -- one of the more common ritual timespans.
But Erik wanted it to be a day shorter. No respect for the
greater rhythms, and that was a real surprise. The man used
to live with elves, he should be used to things taking their
own sweet time. Maybe it's just impatience.

'Raelf sighed, walking into the big circular room that had
no doors. The safest way to keep strangers and guests from
wandering into your private room: don't lock the door, just
don't have one.

He picked up the garden bucket and walked across the sand floor,
stopping to water the plants that Raye had collected. Dozens on
dozens of tropical flowers. Blue and silver orchids, a gift from
an admirer on Catheya. Next to that, a waist high spray of orange
veined leaves the shape of human hands, green-almost-black on top
and white underneath. It had no name -- nobody lived on the
world where it was found. Beyond, a spray of gold and brown fern,
with a thready, top-heavy plume. The smell from the fern was too
sour and sweet, a little over-ripe.

The smell triggered a memory but it vanished again before he could
think about it. He watered the fern, then stared blankly at the
empty water bucket.

Something had just gone missing. Nothing specific, nothing that
made sense. It was like ...

He hissed in frustration. "'Raelf old boy, you gotta get your
lives in order again." He put down the water bucket and wandered
around the garden, thinking.

In the center of the room two shallow bowl-shaped indentations
marked the resting places, his and Raye's. If you stepped into
the pocket of magical reality that pooled in the bottom of hers,
there was a castle.

His held the image of the island where he had been raised. A
decent simulation, surprising at times. He stepped down into the
bowl and he was on the beach. Right now it was slightly overcast,
and a cool wind was blowing inland. Every twenty seconds or so,
the area shook a little farther into one of the five elements: fire,
water, air, earth, void. Then it went back to the "real" mundane
world. Usually it wasn't dramatic enough to notice, except that
it would really mess up any non-'kan unfortunate enough to wander
in. Another reason there wasn't a door.

'Raelf purred quietly to himself, remembering playing in the sand,
throwing water-balls, lying in the sun with his grandpa. This
wasn't a bad place. Maybe his son was enjoying being raised in
the original now.

He heard a noise behind him -- Kev, on a skateboard, the wheels
glowing blue with the Surface rune, so they wouldn't sink into
the sand. He was sixteen, right now, the image of carelessness.
He had a TrailBlazers baseball cap jammed down on his black curly
hair, and a yellow-and-green plaid shirt over a long-sleeved
brown wool tunic over shredded blue jeans. And Doc Martens.
'Raelf winced. It was way too hot for that outfit.
Kev grinned, reading his mind.

<<You call the others yet?>> Kev asked.

<<Still trying to figure some things out, little brother,>> 'Raelf
said. <<Why you ask? You want a conference?>>

<<Maybe. Erik dint know what to do when I showed up before
lunch. When I growed up, it kinda made him real confused.>>

<<Oh? How confused? He think you were cutting in?>>

<<Nah, he thunk I was too young, so I made da shif ta his age,
an his hormones kicked in but he got too shy ta do nuthin.
An' den 'Raf showed up an' Erik din't wanna deal, so we took
off.>> Kev grinned. <<He so cute. You think he...>>

<<So what's to think?>> 'Raf's voice said from behind them.
'Raf and Lex dropped in from nowhere, materializing on the
sand. 'Raelf sighed when he saw that they were wearing
posing trunks. 'Raf was in pure satyr shape, no hint of lion
this time, and the image of masculine perfection, if you like
goatboys. Lex was the fully-human image, tanned darker, hair
blonder, but otherwise just as perfect. 'Raelf made a gagging
noise in the back of his throat.

<<What are you two doing? We quit doing bodybuilding stuff years
ago, remember? Too easy to cheat with magic.>>

<<Yeah,>> Raf said. <<But the idea was to get Erik to take a
serious look at both of us, yknow? At the same time? So he'd
get the clue we're the same guy?>>

<<Won't happen,>> Kev said. <<He don't got a problem in his head,
it's his 'nads got da problem.>>

<<See,>> 'Raf said. <<We're just gonna have to get him in the
dark and see if he can tell the difference.>>

<<Total rip,>> Lex grinned. <<Let's get Raye in on it too.>>

<<Cut it out!>> 'Raelf growled. He sprinted across the sand to
the surf, then dove into the water to let the cold shock to his
skin bring him to full awareness. He surfaced and swam for a while,
then body-surfed in towards shore. Something was coming clear to
him: he had been injured, trapped in timefolding, for too long.

Onshore, Kev was acting as judge for 'Raf and Lex while they
posed, comparing identical bicep measurements. 'Raelf stood back
letting the water drip to the sand.

<<'Raf, you know those goat feet are a real disadvantage,>>
he drawled. <<No calves. You'll never make it without 'em.>>

'Raf started to argue, but he was interrupted.

<<He's roite, 'Raf me old goatkitty,>> said a light elvish
voice from the edge of the palm-tree forest. In the shadows,
the grey-green of his cloak blurred his outline, but when he
pulled back the hood and stepped into the sunlight the red
of his hair stood out like a small bonfire. <<Ye'd have
tae have yer bottom half joodged by a loivestock joodge.>>

<<Don't call me goatkitty,>> 'Raf growled. <<_SHE_ is the
only one who gets to call me that.>> He sulked, and 'Raelf
laughed and scratched the protesting satyrlion on the horns.
'Raf shoved, hard, with those horns, and Kev tackled him.
They ended up all collapsed to the sand.

<<Relax, laddie,>> Miro said to 'Raelf. <<Ye look all a-frizzle.>>
'Raelf shrugged, and let himself revert to the shape he was born
with -- a humanoid cat woven from the Five Elements, with short
yellow-gold fur. He looked a little ragged, though, covered with
scars and scratches from a fight, not yet healed.

The world around them flickered deep into Ocean, birds were fish
and trees were seaweed. The salt tang of the water carried stories
from other shores, recorded stories, not new. The simulation
could only be so good, after all. 'Raelf waited a second for the
surroundings to change back from Water, then looked steadily, not
blinking, at Miro. The elf just smiled and sat down.

<<What's your story?>> 'Raelf demanded.

<<Nothin' tae be wurrit over,>> Miro answered him. <<Tis only
that wee Erik is bound tae do himsel' a wurld a' hurt.>>

<<What do you mean?>> Lex said, startled.

<<I mean the laddie is ... has, by noo, gone off tae learn the
Shadow Element of Earth. And he's taken wee Iradeth wi' him so
tae keep hisself from evaporatin' POOF like a puff a' steam.>>

<<Oh. Merde.>> Lex sat down beside Miro. <<I asked him to wait,
but he's so damn impulsive.>>

Kev folded to his knees beside Lex and slid his arm around the
big man's shoulders. <<Did you foresee something?>>

<<No, just ... when I'm away from him a ways, I can tell more what's
happening. He'll be OK, I think, if he gets help when he gets real
again. No. Something else is wrong. We have to get re-merged,
bro's, there's no time to spare. Uhnng... >> Lex sagged backward,
as Kev and Miro moved to catch him.

<<Oh bloody fraggin' hells and all their smeggin' inmates,>>
'Raelf said. <<He's right. This is what's been bugging me. 'Raf,
can't you feel it too?>>

<<No,>> 'Raf said, apologetically. <<I don't have the foresight
any more, all I have is this Heart's Desire stuff. I'd really
appreciate it if you tell me what you're talking about.>>

'Raelf muttered something really vile, and it fell from the air
and scuttled across the sand, but Miro impaled it on one of his
swords and it evaporated. He shook his head at 'Raelf.

<<We're gonna have to bite the bullet, dudes,>> Lex said quietly,
still lying back against Kev and Miro. <<We gotta get our collective
sh... uh, self together. Fast. Something big happening back home.>>

<<I'd be happy in merging for good,>> Miro said, his accent
abandoned for the moment. <<I feel incomplete without the
rest of you. A strange thought, that. I've been a loner all my
life, and now I crave company. But together, we'd be kind of
crowded, wouldn't we? We're not made for multiple being, not
like ar'Elya. We don't have the headroom. We'd be giving up
our separateness, you know.>>

<<Why not?>> Kev said, slowly. <<I allays thunk dat I was
gonna be budded off, but it'd be lots more fun ta be really a
part of alla you guys... Besides I'd miss da Rat, too.>>

<<But I'll have to fight it out with Dad and Grandad. The
really old ones don't care any more, I hope, but all the rest
of the family might take issue with us changing the Pattern.>>
'Raelf frowned and lashed his tail. <<And we'd for sure change
the Pattern.>>

<<Would be trouble,>> Lex said. <<If I recall, Clan 'Raelf
has never been a real fan of sept-splits and sub-clans. It
looks to me like, we either bud off the four of us and we each
die of our Gift, or we merge and change. I don't think I choose
today to die.>>

<<So we're going to risk creating a new sept in Clan 'Raelf. 'Raf,
you _know_ how bad that would be. The story that Mar twisted
into your memory was pretty much the way that things are for the
'Rhobear and the Hwellim, and they're very similar to us.>> The
cat stalked back and forth, then slumped and licked at the fur on
his left arm where it was rumpled.

'Raf snarled. <<I looked it up in the family memory after I got
the real thing back. We've only had four sept-splits in our
whole history, and those were rejoined before the 'kan learned
to Travel. We've trimmed our family tree, and I don't want to
catch the blame for making it shaggy.>>

'Raelf sighed, or maybe hissed quietly.

<<And I'm sure the Omnivores will object, too,>> Miro said wryly.

<<True point, dude.>> Lex frowned. <<We do have another option,
but it's too gnarly to consider.>>

<<What's that?>> Miro said curiously. 'Raelf 's answer was a
hoarse rasp: <<I could take you in one by one and spawn you
off as new children. Only, I keep the Gifts myself, learn to deal.>>

<<No,>> Miro, and Lex, and Kev, said simultaneously. 'Raf just
growled and wagged his head.

<<All right. So they'd kill me in a century or two. I might
find a way around it. Raye would help. Nah, she'd just try
to take them herself, and ... >>

The others ignored him and he sat down in the sand, muttering.

<<OK, so we merge,>> Lex said. <<We better call the folks.>>

'Raelf hissed again, still muttering.

<<Just do it, boyo,>> Miro said.

<<All right, all right, fine. House, call home.>>

Nothing happened. 'Raelf growled and lowered his ears.

<<House_Control:Select_Commlink:AutoDialer(Phone Home)>>

A subtle chime from nowhere accompanied a sphere of fog
that materialized just above the sand. They waited for
the communication spells to complete, and the image of the
World Gate wormhole swirled briefly before them. Seconds
passed, with 'Raelf fidgeting and muttering while Lex and
Kev thumb-wrestled.

<<Clan 'Raelf, can you hold?>> -- the voice came from a
very stylized representation of a feline face, eyes half-lidded.

<<No, I can't hold. Put me through to The 'Raelf. Code 2.>>

The image wavered and was replaced by the model from whom
the icon had been constructed: a brown-furred feline with
bright green eyes and a gold collar.

<<Gild, Father is not here right now. He's at the College.>>

<<What? He never leaves the holdings, Umra. When is he due?>>

<<Three hours. Hey, how come you're calling from Island?
I thought your kid was there. And why are you echoing so much?>>

<<Little sister, you know I'm calling from Generica. If you
can't tell the difference between Island and a copy...>>

<<Oh, right, everyone has a 'Safyhr Realizer to play with.>>

<<Well, you know _I_ have one and you know why.>>

<<Showoff.>> The brown face assumed the haughty expression that
only a cat can master. 'Raelf sighed.

<<Just tell me when Dad's coming back.>>

<<I did, three hours. How come you're echoing? There's five
of you, all over the place.>>

<<You are a real pest.>>

<<Thank you, now how come?>>

<<I got hurt in a war.>> 'Raelf shrugged. <<It's not that big
a deal, OK?>>

<<Gild, if you got hurt that bad, then how come you haven't
come home? You're the heir, you shouldn't be risking yourself.>>

<<Little sister, did I ever tell you that you are a pain in the ...
neck?>>

<<Only when I bit you. Come on, answer me.>>

'Raelf looked helplessly at Lex, who shrugged and answered.

<<I can't be healed anywhere but here. It's ritual war. If I get
healed anywhere else, I lose the battle, retroactive.>>

<<Oh.>> She blinked, green eyes shifting to blue. <<So, why
do you need to talk to Father?>>

<<You'll find out,>> Lex grinned. <<Now set up a time bridge
to call me back when he gets there.>>

<<OK. You're sure spending the counters.>>

Kev snapped a twig through her image. <<We been doin' real
good for da fam'ly, how much you bring in lately?>>

<<That's not fair,>> Miro said before she could reply. <<She
isn't a Traveller, and she does bring a profit to the family.>>

<<Yer right,>> Kev said. <<Sorry, Umra.>>

<<Hiss,>> she replied. <<You have dog breath.>>

<<Do not. Haven't eaten a dog in months.>>

<<Bridging to plus-six hours,>> she sniffed, and the
image changed. The figure displayed now was a yellow-furred
feline, rangy and with a faint tabby bar-pattern in his
fur. His eyes were mismatched, one blue, one faintly orange.

<<Father,>> 'Raelf said. <<How are you doing?>>

<<I'm well. Why did you call? This is expensive.>>

'Raelf's ears went flat. <<I love you too, Father.>>

<<Now, don't start that again. You know what I mean.>>

<<Why,>> Miro asked, <<were you at the Traveller's College?>>

The orange eye flickered red for a moment, as he glanced over
the assemblage. <<Son, what have you done to yourself?>>

<<I'm stuck,>> Lex answered. <<Don't you ever read your mail?>>

The older feline affected a moment's distraction, elaborately brushing
imaginary lint from the back of his paw. <<Actually, I was hoping
that you would deal with that problem yourself.>>

<<Father, pay attention,>> Miro ordered, and Lex and 'Raelf
flinched as their father's head snapped up in involuntary reaction
to the Command in his voice.

<<What was that? Are you making challenge, son?>> The older
cat suddenly looked much more dangerous, ears tilted flat, fur fluffed.

<<Oh, no,>> Miro answered. <<You made your sandbox, now sleep
in it. I have no desire for rulership of clan 'Raelf. You made me
that way, me darlin', but don't expect me tae put up wi' you ignorin'
me. You can play at bein' King o' th' Cats as long as you like.
Just stop playing it on me.>>

<<So be it. What do you want me to do for you, cub?>>

Kev spoke. <<We're carrying Gifts from one of the Five Wars. Ask
Grandad if you don't remember what that means, but for now -- we're
stuck with them, and we're timeforked. If we can join back up,
there's a good chance we'll be changed, outside the bounds of the
Clan Pattern. We want you to call a Council.>>

<<So we can determine,>> the striped cat drew a black, curved clay
pipe out of the plaid vest he wore, <<whether we should permit you
to proceed.>>

<<No.>> Lex and 'Raf spoke simultaneously. 'Raf continued.
<<We're going to proceed whether you permit it or not. The only
alternative is dying.>>

<<Then it's permitted, of course,>> the cat said, blowing a ring
of greasy black smoke. <<Why do you need a Council?>>

<<Because I don't want to create a sept split.>>

<<Then don't mess up.>> His father grinned, teeth not showing.

<<You're an endless source of comfort,>> 'Raelf growled.

The tiger-stripe let the bottoms of his teeth show. <<So how's
your lovely ice princess? And what's this I hear about you taking
up with a human? Getting bored, or just hungry?>>

Lex flashed with anger but Kev and 'Raf held him back. 'Raelf
glared into the sphere.

<<Just make sure Grandfather and Uncle Bent-ear show up. I don't
want to fight my way through the cousins, and however many sibs
you've spawned off in my absence.>>

<<Four, but they're not going to fight you. They look up to you and
besides they're scared to death of your Grandfather. And your heir,
by the way. Good choice with that one. Going to be a credit to the
family ... if he doesn't try to take my place too soon.>>

<<Great. Hey, you're right, this is expensive. If I survive this,
you'll see me in a sixday. If not, ar'Elya will send you my will.>>

<<Son. Be careful.>> The image reverted to the flat icon, then
went blank. Sand shot up and scattered in the air as the fog
sphere dissipated.

<<That could have gone better,>> 'Raf said. <<I don't think he likes
it that we're still out here. In the Stable Worlds.>>

<<Yeah, well.>> Lex blinked, wiping grit from one eye. <<He's got
something going we're not gonna like. Can't tell what it is though.>>

Miro nodded. <<He was hiding something, had to do with succession.
Wonder if he has anything to -- no, he wouldn't do that.>>

<<Oh yes he would,>> Lex retorted. <<Remember, he was the one
who found the til-death codicil.>>

<<What??!>> 'Raelf half-shouted. <<What are you saying?>>

<<Keep calm,>> Miro said. <<Ye'll ken soon enou.>>

<<Secretive _nothon_>> 'Raf snarled. <<You two better come across
with the whole story or you'll be sorry.>>

<<Yeah,>> Kev said threateningly.

<<Cut it out,>> 'Raelf said. <<We'll worry about daddy dearest later.
Right now we have to figure out how to get back together.>>

<<I bin workin' on dis for da las' two days an I know da right way
how ta pull da lot a' us into one lump,>> Kev said. <<Da problem
is, alla da mergin' comes outa da ritual, an dere's no way we kin
come out da way we go in.>>

Lex shrugged. <<We expected that.>>

<<But I don't think dey really make us split off a sept.>> Kev
pulled a twig from the air and started drawing on the sand.

<<Why wouldn't they?>> 'Raf said.

<<Grandfather's pattern,>> Kev replied. <<Fire, Life, Air, Water,
Metal, Entropy, Tree, Earth. Right?>>

Lex nodded. <<And that's far enough off of the base four that
the Hwellim would call it a sept.>>

'Raf nodded. <<Yeah. Why do you suppose Daddy Dearest only
holds the base four?>>

<<He's awful conservative,>> Kev said. <<Remember, he handed
off all his adventurous bits to us when he budded us off. Wonder
why he did that.>>

<<He's afraid,>> Lex replied. <<He was afraid to go back
Travelling where he might run into gods again. Y'know,
Grandfather pretty much saved him from the divine executioners,
back in that weird little galaxy.>>

<<Oh yeah,>> Kev said. <<An' when I, uh, we, wuz born,
he only went off to the far side of the south-by-spinwards
chain -- didn't even leave clan property.>>

<<Odd to think of him ever being afraid,>> 'Raelf said
thoughtfully. <<But I guess it makes sense. So now.
We take the risk and merge, gifts and all, and if we
split a sept, we'll pay that price. What you got, Kev?>>

They stood around the pattern that the black-haired youth
had drawn in the sand. Equations, of a sort, and rules of
balancing and mixing. Kev pointed with the stick.

<<Built off da ritual from da war. Gotta go back in reverse
order, or maybe we can go in da same order. Don't matter,
but we gotta manage fittin' each of da gifts at da same time.
I dunno,>> he said, <<dese bits is da same as da last four
times. Da only diffrint part is dat we gotta do it ritual,
'stead a just eatin' each odder. An' da gifts ain't wrote
out good enough. Dat's da main part we ain't figgered.>>

<<Four elements. Four gifts. Something is missing.>> Lex
frowned. Miro stared, puzzled. <<Looks aright to me.>>

<<The same pattern we used a few days ago,>> Lex protested.

<<Is not,>> Kev said. <<I moved da gifts to da edges, not in da
middle. See?>>

<<Doesn't matter,>> Lex argued. <<They still throw the same spin
on the balance.>>

<<Yeah, but dey spin in instead of spinnin' out, right?>>

<<I can't tell. It would have to include the full weightings and
you don't have those down here,>> Lex replied. 'Raf nodded,
while Miro just shook his head.

<<Well, they changed when the Reaver taint was purged, anyway.
Better we look at the gifts as they are now.>> 'Raf brushed sand
out of his leg fur.

<<True,>> 'Raelf said. <<I guess what matters is how we're
going to be able to live with them. Lex, can you tell us how
they're linked? Maybe they fit together.>>

<<I don't know,>> Lex said, wonderingly. <<Looks like I can't
use my Gift on itself. Now that I'm trying, I can't even focus on
you guys. Doesn't seem like introspection is part of the package.>>

<<Then I think we're going to have to get help doing this,>>
'Raelf said. <<And I don't want to endanger ar'Elya by having
her be the one who does it. Besides, I want to get our
remaining dislocated person back.>>

<<What remaining dislocated person?>> 'Raf said. <<We're
all here, aren't we?>>

<<Don't you remember we left our Void focus behind?>>

<<No,>> Kev said, echoed by Lex and Miro. 'Raf looked at
'Raelf, puzzled. <<What are you talking about?>>

<<In the battle, remember? We left a chunk of our future
with Raphael?>> 'Raelf blinked slowly at them. They just
stared back at him. <<Look, if you don't remember, then
work it out from the ritual. Lex, you were right there, you
should recall some of this.>>

<<I don't.>> He stared at 'Raelf. <<Miro, what's going on?>>

<<There's a block on your mind, laddie,>> Miro said, staring
at Lex. <<Yours too, goat-legs. And you, alley cat.>> Kev
glowered at him. <<Ain't no alley cat.>>

Miro ignored him. <<And I have nae recollection o' any
fifth part, and therefore, I've got a block meself.>>

<<What is it?>> 'Raelf asked. <<Where did it come from?>>

<<I dinna ken. Tis always been there,>> Miro ansered. <<But you,
laddie, you haven't got one.>>

<<And I can remember the end just fine, and Lex and 'Raf and Kev
were both there, so they should be able to. But I wonder why
you guys would end up blocked about this?>> He chewed the end
of his tail thoughtfully.

<<So we need to go to the source, eh?>> Miro said, pulling his
hood up over his rust-colored hair. <<Foine. Whos the source?>>

<<Dont you remember Raphael?>>

<<Now that you mention him, yes,>> Lex said. <<Cant really
feel him though. Something there, but just a kind of echo.>>

Raelf jumped up, excited. <<You get an echo? Show me,>>
and he put one handpaw on either side of Lexs head. A moment
later, he let go. <<Yep. That means the last bit's finally awake.>>

<<So, we have to call this Raphael guy?>> Kev asked.

<<He'll show,>> 'Raelf replied. <<Like the last two times.>>

The others looked blankly at him. <<Last two?>>

He stood, walked over to the edge of the water. <<Stability set
to full, engage.>>

The mist fell to the ground, precipitated suddenly. The sands
became more solidly sand, the sunlight was the major source of
Fire, and the water that washed across the fur of 'Raelf's feet
was liquidity, not a variation on Air. <<Permissivity set to
.2024, field local to me.>> A swirl of colors began to flicker
around 'Raelf, like a soap bubble. <<That's better. Just
because he's comfortable here doesn't mean I can't be.>> He
held his hands to his mouth and shouted to Void:

<<Raphael Healer, come here to me! I need your help!>>

There was a moment's quiet, then the sound of wings in the
distance. From around them, the wings folded, and closed across
six dimensions. The tall, angular, blond form of the Healer stood
on the sand.

"I've been waiting for your call, he said. "It has been a year
and a day since you freed me, and I took the name of Healer. Now
I can repay my debt to you."
