While Kyar puttered about the small campfire waiting for Alarond to
bring more wood, Coltren sat by his bedroll with lodestone in hand, searching
for Tevore's mind. The crystal shed a bright azure glow with the amount of
power the Lyorn duan was channelling through it, spinning the threads of energy
into a sturdy rope to fling out into the shadow umbra.

Tevore caught hold of Coltren's line and used it to draw their minds
together for the conversation. <Hello boy, I see you're making some progress.>

<Naturally,> Coltren answered without preamble. He immediately got
down to business, asking the warlock how Aleric was and what news he had of the
Vale of Janariak.

The warlock's mind tone was sober as he replied, <Not good. From what I
can tell, Aleric is worse than ever now. He is so entirely sunk that all I can
get from him now are echoes of his fever dreams. And those are not pretty to
say the least.>

Coltren furrowed his brow and frowned. He glanced up and signalled to
Kyar to start paying attention, and felt the Phadran's light touch enter his
mind in response. <What of the Shekiren? Obviously they're aware of his
presence...>

<Quite so, and apparently have been aware of it for longer than we'd
realized. I keep noticing a lot of activity at Highspire, but for some reason
they've pulled back many of the nighthaunts to the keep. I can't figure out
where they're all going or what they're planning.>

<That sounds pretty ominous,> Kyar remarked.

Tevore paused, startled at hearing a strange voice. He recovered
quickly as Coltren shot him a tightly shielded reassurance and explanation of
the Phadran. <Well, certainly so. I'll let you know if there are any more
developments of note here. That's all that's really important just now.>

Coltren nodded, even though the warlock couldn't see it, the impression
of the action hung in his thoughts. Just as he was about to say something else
to the warlock, he felt a stirring in the shadow umbra where the three of them
conversed. A sensation like a vacuum suddenly appeared in the space behind
their virtual selves hit them together with a strong wind created from the air
being sucked into the vacuum.

Kyar cried out as Coltren suddenly slammed down his barriers, kicking
out both the Phadran and Tevore from the connection. The lodestone flared, and
went dark as Coltren severed all links to the shadow umbra. Scrambling to his
feet, Coltren unsheathed his sword that lay nearby and tried to be ready for
what was about to come speeding from the forest at them.
