     The young silver-haired woman looked up shyly, blinking away the 
tears of self-pity that had begun to form in her eyes.  She stared 
blankly at the stranger for a few moments, then looked down at the little 
white stick he was obviously trying to light with a strange golden 
object.  She squinted at the stick, and abruptly one end of it burst into 
flame.  "Is that right?" she asked, her voice so soft that it could 
hardly be heard over the noise of the crowd.
