The inn seemed strangely quiet. Those who were there kept to
themselves. Cernborn listened to the rain pounding the roof. Dreary
weather always seem to bring dampened spirits as well. Hopefully the
inn would provide some evening entertainment; he could use some
distractions from his thoughts.

Several minutes after Littlefair disappeared, a barmaid came out of
the kitchen with a large bowl of stew. She set it on the bar in front
of him, snatched the gold coin he had left earlier, and hurried back
into the kitchen. Cernborn delicately tasted the stew. "Not bad," he
thought especially after his latest fare. He turned his attention
from the commons room and ate the stew, again with meticulous motions
so that none of the stew so much as touched the exterior of his lips.

Littlefair returned as he was finishing up the stew.

"The good lady who has the room I mentioned for the night will not
say yea or nay until she meets you," said Littlefair. "She asks that
you join her for dinner at eight here in the commons room."

"I should have mentioned this earlier," he continued, "we can always
bring in a tub with hot water to whichever room if that would
suffice."

"The movable tubs be much smaller than that one, yes?"
Cernborn responded.

"Yes, that's true. But, not.."

Cernborn interrupted, "Hast thou noticed my height? 'Tis a trifle
more than most." He met Littlefair's eyes, seemingly daring him to
ask yet another question.

Littlefair took the hint. "Well, yes, of course. So, I should tell
the lady that you will meet her for dinner, then?"

Cernborn nodded in reply. "In the meantime, may I have use of another
room to clean up since I'm to be dining with the lady?" He handed
Littlefair two more gold coins.

Littlefair nodded. "Of course, if you'll follow me up the stairs."

Cernborn took the last swallow of ale and turned to follow Littlefair.
