> "I would like to get this over with quickly," Aegeneas says, "Because I

A look of total startlement passed over Polter's face, immediately
replaced by his habitual calm gaze. He spoke, hesitantly: "That will be
plenty, I believe - several times what we'd ask in such a case ... "
He glanced at Kejachan. "We come in touch with a number of wizardly
people here - one of them could doubtless help deal with this ... "

Kejachan's mouth, which had fallen open at the mention of the sum of
gold, now shut with a snap. "Polter, would you be kind enough to get
over here and explain to me, your boss, just what is going on?"

The other nodded, said "Pardon me" to Aegeneas, and walked over to the
desk, where he began a softly spoken argument - discussion? explanation?
- what was being communicated was not clear.

Aegeneas watched them, a bit nervously. Perhaps she'd been too hasty in
trusting Polter, but someone had to understand the purpose for this
expedition, and Kejachan ... didn't feel right, somehow.

The muttered conversation came to an end. Kejachan nodded, saying "Do as
you will," as he sat back in his chair. Polter straightened and turned
back to Aegeneas. "Kejachan has agreed to let me take charge of the
squad of soldiers escorting you. The first thing you should know is that
whatever the money base where you come from, the economy here is based on
silver, rather than gold, which makes you incredibly rich. The price per
day for the squad, plus me, will be 42 shekels (silver pieces) per day;
you'll have no trouble covering that. Probably the first thing we'll
want to do is get those ... objects ... examined by a competent magician,
and see what can be done. Afterward, I assume you'll be wanting to go
after this sorceress; we're well-equipped for that sort of thing. What
do you say?"
