The cold rain misted down over the rolling hills, as if the sky itself
sorrowed. Around a simple monument constructed of smooth stones mortared
together on the peak of the hill overlooking the ruined farmhouse, stood
a young couple. The man was kneeling in front of the monument regardless
of the mud and rain soaking into his clothing. At his side stood a woman,
slender with flaming red hair, dressed in a skirt and tunic constructed
of stripes of cloth in various hues and sizes. "Samuel, there was nothing
you could have done even if she would have let you come. The trolls tore
up every farm and village in this valley and the next. No one person
could have changed that." Samuel rocked back onto his heels and looked up
at her, the rain obliterating any trace of tears on his face. "I know
Sara, but still I wonder whether or not it would have made a difference.
Maybe the gods would have seen it fit to allow us to carry the day." Sara
looked down into his eyes and smiled. "Someday maybe the gods might, but
for now we have to go meet that shaman of the dragon clan. Let us say our
goodbyes and go." Turning his head Samuel looked back at the monument,
"Ay, as usual you are right, it is time. They would have liked you I
think." Sara's smile grew mischevious "Then we'll just have marry, huh."

Fade to gray.

"Watch your back, shoot straight, conserve ammo,
and never ever cut a deal with a dragon."
